Peace Pole Dedication

posted: September 14, 2012

Friday, September 21 at 8:30 a.m.

As many of you have probably noticed, we are finishing up our expansion project with some beautification in our gardens.  In addition to planting, we are installing an American flag and a Peace Pole.  We are postponing the dedication of our Peace Pole until Friday, September 21.  The United Nations chose this day in 1981 to be the International Day of Peace, and we would like to participate with others around the world, who will be observing International Peace Day on this particular day.

The UN General Assembly has declared International Peace Day as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.  UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has stated that this day “gives us a chance to reflect on the unconscionable toll—moral, physical, material—wrought by war.  Those costs are borne not only by us today, but by future generations as well.”  While these are very adult concepts to contemplate, we discuss peace here at NKMC in terms that children can relate to.

Maria Montessori was nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize during her lifetime.  She recognized the importance of education to further understanding between cultures across the globe.  She stated: “Averting war is the work of politicians; establishing peace is the work of education.”  Here at NKMC, we want to do our small part in advancing this message of peace.

We would like for parents who are able, to join us on the 21st , immediately following drop-off, for a dedication ceremony to be held on the playground.  The Peace Pole will be installed near the front door of our main office for all visitors to see.  For this one occasion, we ask that you park in the Park & Ride lot across the street from us (before you get to the ice-skating rink) after you drop off your child, then we won’t be causing parking problems for our neighboring businesses.
